GARDEN CITY FAMILY YMCA

 Celebrates 50 Years

GARDEN CITY, KAN – The Garden City Family YMCA is celebrating 50 years in 2014. August 17, 2014 will mark the anniversary date that the YMCA was founded and to celebrate the YMCA is throwing a huge party on August 18 in which we would like to invite the community to attend. The YMCA’s mission is “To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.”

Since 1964, the YMCA has been serving Finney County and the surrounding communities behind the foresight of three gentlemen; Clifford Mayo, Bryce Roderick Sr and Carlos C. Spikes. The YMCA was blessed back then by our founding fathers and today we are fortunate to have the community support our non-profit organization. Being a membership and program-driven organization, we rely on volunteers and contributions to help support our mission. From our first campaign of $300,000 to build the YMCA to our very latest Capital Campaign of over $2 million, this YMCA is built from donors, friends and foundations who believe in our mission!

For 50 years the Garden City Family YMCA has been a way of life for its members,  Ed and Nelda Lewis have been members and supporters with the YMCA since the doors have been open.

“The 8:30 am class has been a part of my life since the Y began. I appreciate it very much because I believe it has helped my overall health and happiness,” stated Nelda Lewis. Ed and Nelda Lewis were inducted into the Heritage Club Hall of Fame in 2013.

The YMCA has five program areas:  Aquatics, Sports, Health & Fitness, Child Care, or Family & Teens – and we strive to emphasize our core values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring. Our local slogan “The YMCA – Where Value Meets Values,” was given to our CEO, Chad Knight from an outgoing board member who served as Board President. Mr. Knight thought very highly of this slogan and more importantly felt the YMCA had a special place in the heart of that volunteer to be handed that piece of paper as he exited his last board meeting.

“I salute all of our wonderful volunteers, caring staff and special friends for making the Garden City Family YMCA the place to be in Garden City. I encourage you to stop by and come visit our YMCA for a free tour and guest pass. We would love to have you join our family!” explained Chad Knight, CEO.

Along with the programs the YMCA offers many other programs such as the Keeping Our Promise Program and the Helping Our Hands Scholarship Program to ensure that our entire community is included in the YMCA mission. The Keeping Our Promise program was started by the Heritage Club (YMCA Endowment) in 2000. This program has grown to provide two to four youth a scholarship to the YMCA for one year to every USD #457 elementary school, two intermediate centers, two parochial schools and the Holcomb elementary schools. The YMCA served 62 youth in Garden City last year with this program. The Helping Hands Scholarship Program and our Annual Support is the backbone of our organization. This campaign enables the Y to award scholarships to those who might not be able to utilize our facility without financial assistance.

"The YMCA helped me when I had no one to turn to. They essentially became my family. I always told my kids, “You put God and education 1st, and you will succeed.” Family is important, the YMCA is my family I love it here. The YMCA continues to help in ways that people sometimes never realize. Thanks to the YMCA, my kids have been introduced to football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, swim team, and many other activities. Children today have many influences waiting for them. The YMCA helps kids get involved in sports and other fun after school activities. There are so many other unhealthy and damaging things children could be doing after schools, and on weekend, and the YMCA helps to deter that, helping to ensure a better future for them." stated Tina Barton, Childcare Scholarship Recipient

The YMCA of Southwest Kansas was formed in 2013 by adding The Dodge City Family YMCA branch in Dodge City. The Garden City Family YMCA currently serves 6,445 members and the Dodge City Family YMCA currently serves 3,045 members.

The YMCA has been celebrating all year with special Join for FREE days every 50 days throughout the year and specials for every 50th new member. Beginning June 30 they will be giving away 50 prizes leading up to the Anniversary Celebration. The 50 year celebration will be August 18. The YMCA will have cupcakes and a balloon launch at 3:00 pm. There will also be activities throughout the day with the bounce houses in the gymnasium and popcorn and water. Come celebrate with the YMCA!
