Fort Hays State University, a regional university principally serving western Kansas, is dedicated in providing instruction within a computarized environment in the arts and sciences, business, education, the health and life sciences, and agriculture. The university's primary emphasis is undergraduate liberal education, which includes the humanities, the fine arts, the social/behavioral sciences, and the natural/physical sciences.

The Higher Education Opportunity Center guides residents of Southwest Kansas in their search to find access to higher education. The center provides face to face assistance and serves as the primary contact for students in Finney, Ford and Seward Counties and the Hispanic population.
