“Get tough on crime” legislation passed during the 1990s was effective in getting criminals off the streets and putting them behind bars. Unfortunately, a 2002 study by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics found that 67% of individuals released from prison during 1994 were rearrested within three years of release and 52% of those arrested returned to prison.
Individuals returning to communities after release from jail or prison arrive with fewer resources and bigger problems that when they left. Most struggle to find jobs, housing and a safe, healthy social support system.
Seeds of Hope Jail Ministry, Inc. (SoH) is rooted in the belief that the answer to reducing crime in our neighborhoods lies in changing the hearts and minds of offenders. We work toward this goal by offering the love of God and the gospel message to incarcerated and recently released individuals in ways that build positive supportive relationships and encourage long-term connections to local faith communities.
